The US President and his Colombian counterpart have turned up the tone of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations following American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He runs cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.
Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations
Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president hinted at comparable use of force against Bogotá, claiming the country faces serious problems and governed by a sick man who likes making narcotics and distributing it to the United States."
Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is directly connected to the trade.
A Deteriorating Partnership
Colombia has long been a key ally of the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and received wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.
The nation's narcotics trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a 2016 peace deal.
Petro's Firm Rebuttal
When asked whether armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."
The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he stated.
"He comments without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.
"If US bombs target peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, which a significant portion of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the fierce spirit of the populace," Petro warned.
From Insurgent to President
Petro spent some years as a young man as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he took part in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.
"I made a vow not to touch a gun ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he affirmed.
Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Opposition
Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's protection team had been reinforced.
Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have rejected the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.
Political and Economic Strains
The US withdrew his travel authorization after he called on US military personnel to refuse orders that violate law. In October, authorities imposed asset freezes against the president, his wife and a number of associates.
Concurrently the US was building up its forces in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
